Why use Unit Price Calculator
- Compares up to four products at once with a clear Best Value badge -- make the call right in the store aisle.
- Shows how much you save per unit compared to the most expensive option, not just which is cheapest.
- Supports weight (oz, lb, g, kg), volume (mL, L), and count -- covers groceries, beverages, and household supplies.
- Bulk-buy verification: confirm the warehouse-size package actually beats the regular grocery store price per ounce.
- Results update as you type, so swapping in a different package size takes seconds.
How it works
Unit price is price divided by quantity. The calculator runs this for each product, sorts the results, and tags the lowest with a Best Value badge. Savings are the difference between the highest and lowest unit prices, multiplied by the best-value product's quantity to show a concrete dollar amount. Per-unit prices are rounded to four decimal places (per-ounce prices are often fractions of a cent) alongside two-decimal-place totals. The tool does not convert between incompatible units -- comparing ounces to liters requires manual conversion first.
About this tool
A 32-ounce jar for $5.99 versus a 16-ounce jar for $3.49 versus a 48-ounce jar for $7.89 -- which is the best deal? Enter the price and quantity for up to four products and the calculator shows the price per unit for each, with a Best Value badge on the winner and the dollar and percentage savings compared to the most expensive option. The math is just price divided by quantity, but doing it across three or four products with different package sizes in a grocery aisle is where mistakes happen. Supported units include ounces, pounds, grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters, and count (for items sold by the piece). All products in a comparison share the same unit so the per-unit prices are directly comparable. Results update as you type.
How to use Unit Price Calculator
- Add a product. Type the product name, total price, and quantity (e.g., 32 oz).
- Add competing products. Enter up to three more items to compare against.
- Pick the unit type. Select ounces, grams, liters, count, or another unit so all products are on the same basis.
- Read the verdict. The Best Value badge lands on the cheapest per-unit option, with savings shown in dollars and percent.
Use cases
- Standing in the cereal aisle comparing a 12 oz box at $4.29 against an 18 oz box at $5.99 -- which is cheaper per ounce?
- Warehouse club member checking whether the bulk laundry detergent actually beats the regular supermarket price per load.
- Restaurant owner comparing olive oil suppliers by price and volume to find the lowest cost per liter.
- Buying diapers online and comparing three box sizes to find the lowest per-diaper cost before locking in a subscription.
- Office manager comparing paper suppliers by the per-ream price across four vendors before placing a quarterly order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Unit price is the cost per single unit of measurement (per ounce, per gram, per item, etc.). It lets you compare different package sizes on an equal basis. The lower the unit price, the better the deal.
Divide the total price by the quantity. For example, a 24 oz bottle for $3.60 has a unit price of $3.60 ÷ 24 = $0.15 per ounce.
Usually, but not always. Stores sometimes price medium sizes lower per unit during sales.
Many US states require unit pricing on shelf labels to help consumers compare values across different brands and sizes. The format varies -some show price per ounce, others per 100 count.
Only if the units are convertible (e.g., grams vs. kilograms). This calculator compares products using the same unit type. For meaningful comparisons, make sure all items use compatible units.
