Why use GPA Calculator

  • Enter courses from any semester in one list -- no need for separate semester-by-semester calculations.
  • Quality points per row reveal exactly which classes are dragging the average down.
  • Supports plus/minus grading (A-, B+, etc.) for precision a simple 4-point lookup misses.
  • What-if scenarios let you swap a projected grade and see the GPA impact before the semester ends.
  • Credit-hour weighting is built in, so a 5-credit core course carries the right proportional weight against a 2-credit elective.

How it works

GPA is computed by assigning a numeric point value to each letter grade (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to F = 0.0) and multiplying by credit hours to produce quality points. A B+ in a 4-credit course yields 3.3 x 4 = 13.2 quality points. The calculator sums quality points and divides by total credit hours: cumulative GPA = total quality points / total credit hours. Credit-hour weighting means a 3-credit elective has less impact than a 5-credit core course. The result updates live as you add or edit rows.

About this tool

Wondering what your GPA actually is before grades officially post? Add your courses -- name, credit hours, and letter grade for each one -- and get your cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Each row shows quality points earned, so you can see exactly which classes are pulling the average up or dragging it down. The formula: multiply credit hours by the grade point value (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, etc.), sum the quality points, divide by total credits. A 3-credit A earns 12.0 quality points; the same course with a B+ earns 9.9. The concept is simple but the arithmetic gets tedious across a full transcript. The real value is what-if scenarios. Swap a projected B- for an A- in organic chemistry and see whether your cumulative crosses the 3.5 threshold for med school applications. Transfer students consolidating credits from two schools, scholarship applicants verifying a minimum, and seniors checking Latin honors eligibility all need this kind of quick math. University portals only show the official number after grades post -- this tool lets you run projections while you can still influence the outcome.

How to use GPA Calculator

  1. Add a course. Type the course name, select credit hours, and pick the letter grade from the dropdown.
  2. Add more rows. Click the add button to enter additional courses from any semester.
  3. Read quality points. Each row shows the quality points earned -- credits times grade point value.
  4. Check your GPA. The cumulative GPA appears at the top and updates as you add or change rows.

Use cases

  • Pre-med sophomore modeling whether retaking organic chemistry would push the cumulative above 3.5 for med school applications.
  • Senior calculating the final cumulative across eight semesters to see if Latin honors are within reach.
  • Transfer student figuring out how community college credits translate to a 4.0 scale at the new university.
  • Grad school applicant entering every undergraduate course to confirm the GPA clears the 3.0 minimum on the admissions page.
  • Academic advisor working with a student on probation to calculate exactly what grades next semester would bring the GPA above 2.0.
  • Scholarship applicant double-checking cumulative GPA against the 3.7 requirement before submitting the renewal form.

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's credit hours by the grade's point value (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.), summing those quality points, then dividing by total credit hours. For example, an A in a 3-credit course earns 12 quality points.

A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5 or higher is very competitive for graduate school, and a 3.7+ is excellent. Dean's list typically requires 3.5 or above, though requirements vary by institution.

Standard US 4.0 scale: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0.

Yes. Enter all courses from all semesters to get your cumulative GPA. The calculator weighs each course by its credit hours, so courses with more credits have a proportionally larger impact.

Plus grades add 0.3 points (B+ = 3.3) and minus grades subtract 0.3 points (B- = 2.7) compared to the base letter grade. An A+ is still 4.0 at most schools. These increments can significantly affect your cumulative GPA over many courses.

Semester GPA covers only one term's courses. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across all semesters, weighted by credit hours. This calculator computes cumulative GPA from whatever courses you enter.
